In our “Another Happy Ending” series, we talk with Jane A.* (name changed for privacy) about her experience working with Smedley Law Group founder AllynMarie Smedley, Esq. during numerous family law matters, including divorce. “Ali was very well prepared and detail-oriented, and those qualities, combined with my extensive list of supporting documents, resulted in a favorable outcome for me,” she says.

Q: How did you find and select Ali’s firm to represent you?

A: I had previously worked with Ali Smedley at Trace and Jenkins during my first divorce and was very pleased with the results. When I faced divorce for the second time, I decided to work with Ali, since I had such a favorable impression of her. This time, she was heading up Smedley & Lis. I was fortunate to retain her as my attorney.

Q: Looking for the right attorney to represent you during your divorce can be tough. What characteristics were you looking for in an attorney. How did your lawyer line up?

A: For both of my divorces, I was seeking some specific characteristics in an attorney: honest, straightforward, competent, compassionate, and patient. I also wanted to retain a female attorney, since I felt a woman would  be more empathetic to my situation, while advocating for my best interests. Finally, I was looking for an attorney with a successful practice, but not one who was too busy to respond to my needs. That all fit Ali to a T.

Q: Did you have any particular challenges or special circumstances that your attorney and the firm helped with?

A: My ex is an attorney, so I was concerned that he’d have an unfair advantage. I worried that he’d try to leverage his position due to his profession. Ali was very well prepared and detail-oriented, and those qualities combined with my extensive list of supporting documents for my case, resulted in a favorable outcome for me.

Q: What’s a good first step to take when you’ve got to make the decision to split, or when your spouse has told you he or she wants a divorce?

A: It’s easier for me to talk about it now, since several years have passed since my second divorce. The range of emotions that people experience as they go through a divorce are so varied. It’s all part of the healing process, but at the same time, you’re riding a roller coaster ride of emotions everyday. My advice would be: Find someone who’s a good listener, especially close family members or friends.

Q: What was your overall experience working with the firm?

A: My experience working with Ali’s firm was very positive, and I was as comfortable as I could have been under those circumstances. I’d highly recommend this firm to anyone who needs legal advice and/or legal representation for a family law matter.
